Nirmala – Food Writer & Creator of The Tasty Tales

Hello, I’m Nirmala

Welcome to The Tasty Tales.

I’m Nirmala, a food writer and the creator of The Tasty Tales, a food and travel website focused on restaurant experiences, local food, traditional dishes, bakeries, cafés, and culinary stories.

I am based in Bengaluru, a city that has played an important role in my love for food and travel.

Before starting The Tasty Tales, I worked with TCS in Bengaluru. Today, I spend my time exploring food destinations, researching culinary stories, and creating useful guides for people who enjoy discovering new places to eat.

Why I Started The Tasty Tales

My interest in food goes beyond simply eating a good meal.

I enjoy discovering the story behind a restaurant, understanding what makes a dish special, and exploring the food traditions of different neighbourhoods and cities.

A simple breakfast at an old South Indian restaurant can tell a story about Bengaluru’s food culture. Similarly, a traditional bakery can preserve recipes and flavours that have been enjoyed for generations.

These experiences inspired me to create The Tasty Tales.

What I Write About

My main interests include:

  • Bengaluru restaurants
  • Bengaluru food trails
  • Karnataka cuisine
  • Traditional South Indian food
  • Heritage restaurants
  • Local bakeries
  • Breakfast destinations
  • Cafés and filter coffee
  • Regional Indian food
  • Food and travel experiences

I particularly enjoy finding places that have character, history, local popularity, or a unique food story.

How I Create Restaurant Reviews

Whenever possible, I personally visit restaurants and experience the food, ambience, service, and overall dining environment.

During a visit, I pay attention to details that can help another food lover plan their own experience.

These may include:

  • What I ordered
  • Taste and texture
  • Portion size
  • Ambience
  • Service
  • Approximate pricing
  • Location
  • Best time to visit
  • Popular dishes
  • What stood out during the experience

I then combine those observations with useful background information about the restaurant or food.

When I Have Not Personally Visited a Place

Not every restaurant featured on The Tasty Tales is a place I have personally visited.

For restaurants and destinations I have not experienced first-hand, I use research instead.

I review information from reliable sources, local recommendations, restaurant information, food publications, community feedback, and other relevant material.

Most importantly, I do not describe a researched restaurant as though I personally visited it.

This distinction matters because I want readers to understand where information comes from.

My Approach to Food Writing

I believe food writing should be useful as well as enjoyable.

A restaurant article should not simply say that a dish is “amazing” or “must try.” Instead, I try to explain what makes the food interesting and what a visitor can realistically expect.

Taste is subjective, so I avoid presenting my personal preference as an absolute fact.

Instead, I share my observations and provide practical information that helps readers decide whether a restaurant or dish is right for them.

What I Look For During Food Exploration

I am especially interested in:

Heritage and history:
Restaurants and food traditions that have survived across generations.

Local flavours:
Dishes that reflect the culture and everyday food habits of a region.

Neighbourhood favourites:
Small restaurants, bakeries, cafés, and eateries that may not always receive national attention.

Signature dishes:
Foods that give a restaurant or destination its unique identity.

Food experiences:
The atmosphere, people, surroundings, service, and little details that make a meal memorable.

Transparency Matters

Restaurant information changes over time.

Prices, menus, opening hours, locations, and availability may change after an article is published.

Therefore, I encourage readers to confirm important details directly with the restaurant before visiting.

If an article is based on research rather than my own visit, I aim to make that clear.

My goal is not to promote every restaurant I mention. Instead, I want to provide useful information and honest observations so readers can make their own choices.

My Food & Travel Philosophy

I believe some of the best food memories come from unexpected places.

It could be a crispy dosa at a busy breakfast counter, a warm puff from a neighbourhood bakery, a cup of filter coffee served in a traditional steel tumbler, or a regional dish discovered while travelling.

Those small experiences are often what make food travel special.

Through The Tasty Tales, I hope to document those experiences and help readers discover more of them.

Thank You for Being Here

Every restaurant, dish, bakery, and food destination has a story.

I’m grateful that I get to explore some of those stories and share them with you.
